If you guys are Bass Music lovers like I am, you surely already follow the I Love Bass Music page on facebook. Headed by a bunch of great guys who are super passionate about their bass music (yeah, that’s you takeAbath – JLD #31 – JLD #18 – JLD #07).

Well this past week, ILBM just celebrated their first anniversary of online goodness. To celebrate this great event, the boys have brought together 17 great tracks ranging in producers from Dro Carey, VLSONN, Ryan Hemsworth, Exeter (I saw this guy do his thing at a RedBull event not long ago…and WOW, i was impressed!) and many more. Best of all, you can get this compilation at the great price of “Name your price” aka free if your too cheap to support.

Here is a few words from ILBM:

Launched in May 2011, I Love Bass Music operates as a central aggregation site for all things bass music. Dubstep, House, Techno, Juke, Garage, 2-step, Trap, Hip Hop….. if it has a fat low end, chances are it has been posted on the page.

Now transmitting from various areas in Canada, we look to feature artists from around the world that are making interesting music that operates in our desired frequencies. Over the last year we have had the privilege of sharing amazing musical projects from all sorts of artists, familiar favorites and upstart producers alike. We’ve spent countless hours scouring the internet, listening to the radio, and sifting through record stores, and we’ve been lucky enough to have loads of promos and demos sent our way so that we enjoy the music ourselves and, in turn, share it with our readers.

So as a way to give back to you all for your support over the last year we’ve compiled a compilation of some of the artists that we have had the privilege of learning about through this page and in our daily digs for new music.

Clocking in at 17 tracks and 73 minutes, ILBM001 explores all the edges of the bass world spectrum. Crazy drum edits, weird Moog-led soundscapes, chopped up and re-pitched vocals, syncopated percussion, and a wealth of low frequency experiments. World wide representation on this one.

Mutek is a beautiful thing. While Montreal is well renowned as a world-class party city complete with some of the wildest raves you’ll ever see, we do things a little differently every year at the end of may – classing it up and dusting off our premium venues for 5 days of forward thinking electronic art. Focusing on live performances rather than DJs and uncompromising artists rather than popular party starters, the festival is a fantastic opportunity to expand your musical horizons and hear some incredible performers on massive sound systems. If you’re expecting bass drops and glowsticks however, it can be a bit of a shock – Mutek is no Shambhala and parsing the lineup of serious (but seriously dope) musicians can be a challenge for those who aren’t down with the underground. I’ve got your back though: here’s five acts Bass music fans won’t want to miss at this year’s edition of Mutek, complete with a bluffer’s guide so you can get familiar.

1. Shackleton
Sounds like: An evil voodoo ceremony if voodoo ceremonies had sub-bass.

Why should you go? Shackleton has never dropped a bad record, period. From his genre-defining Dubstep singles with Appleblim on Skull Disco to his definitive performance mix for Fabric to his most recent collaboration with Pinch, this dapper Englishman has consistently delivered the deepest, darkest, scariest music around all without resorting to clichés. The secret is in his unique approach: while you can certainly dance to Shackleton’s music, he never sets out to make “dance music” proper, avoiding the tired tropes and expectations that sometimes ground other producers. With a brand new box-set dropping immediately before Mutek, expect plenty of new sounds from his appearance.

2. Kode9
Sounds like: the smartest DJ you’ll ever dance to.

Why should you go? Back in 2002 when Dubstep didn’t even have a name yet, Kode9 was blogging and theorizing about the elements that would soon come together to form the most exciting new genre in electronic music. Since then, his Hyperdub record label has put out some of the most exciting electronic music in the world from Terror Danjah and Ikonika’s fluorescent dance tunes to King Midas Sound’s apocalyptic lover’s rock and Darkstar’s sullen art-rock. As a DJ, he’s long since moved-on from the half-step sound into the realm of UKFunky and beyond but there’s practically no way to know what he might drop: from Jungle to Latin-Freestyle, he can and will play anything. You should also be on the look-out for his performance art project/remix of legendary French filmmaker Chris Marker’s La Jetée – Mutek is one of the only places in the world where he’ll be showing it.
Oh, and he’s the man who “discovered” Burial. Just sayin’.

3.A Guy Called Gerald
Sounds like: A man who’s been playing and releasing music for over 25 years now.

Why should you go? A Guy Called Gerald has released House, Techno, Jungle and more over the course of his illustrious career. The is man responsible for legendary dance single Voodoo Ray as well as Black Secret Technology – easily one of the best Jungle albums of all time – so there’s zero doubt as to why he’s prominently displayed at the top of Mutek’s lineup this year. While it’s impossible to predict just what he’ll pull out for his set this year, when a DJ has this much experience under his belt one doesn’t start fretting about genres and specifics – you just enjoy the ride and dance your face off.

4. Shlohmo
Sounds like: Medical Marijuana in musical form backed by strong songwriting skills.

Why should you go? Shlohmo’s played in Montreal before but to be blunt…he deserved a better sound system. Thankfully, Mutek has stepped up and given him one, providing a bigger stage and venue for the Los Angeles beatmaker to do his thing. Part of the incredible stable of artists orbiting around LA’s legendary Low End Theory club night, Shlohmo surprised the critics by moving away from the “stoned beats” that have characterized the scene into full-fledged songwriting and composition, but his DJ sets also include plenty of party-starters from acts as varied as rap idiot-savant Lil B and crunk firestarter Waka Flocka Flame. If you’ve seen him before, you know the score – now experience his sound the way it was meant to be heard.

5. Jeff Mills
Sounds like: Techno.

Why should you go? It’s Jeff Mills OK? That might not mean anything to the young’ns but this dude was dropping mind-altering bass when you were in pre-school. As a founding member of Underground Resistance, Jeff Mills didn’t just release some of the best dance music ever made, he also laid the groundwork for the entire philosophy of underground electronic music: rebellious, independent and all about the tunes. Plus the entire Mutek crowd is going to be going insane on the dancefloor for this one – they love Techno like that.

I never know what to expect when I receive emails from new artist or labels. It’s a big hit or miss game that often leaves us discouraged about our overflowing email accounts. But…. when it’s worth it, it make everything better. This is just that, a new label launched recently under the name of Audio Empathy. Maybe it was their well crafted email, or their clever logo – whatever reason led me to click onto their website was a good one.

To help spread the love of bass music and to put the word on the streets about their arrival, Audio Empathy released a free 5 track EP for you all to enjoy and spread around like wild fire. Grouping up names such as Edoc, Volatil, Blind Prophet, Alien Pimp and Ikkaky – this great compilation of work can be yours in MP3 format, or even WAV format. Gotta love that extra effort they’ve put in place for quality. If your serious about rinsing this out, I would strongly recommend the WAV format to reinforce those deep bass lines!

From “Icicle” by Notion to a .wav of Royal T‘s “Orangeade VIP,” label heads Elijah and Skilliam know how to keep their listeners frothing from the mouth. There are also the covers of their next catalogued releases from Ruby Lee Ryder and Champion, one of the many DJs who lit the Butterz 2nd anniversary party with a massive set. Coming soon from Phantom Hertz comes Low Voltage Vol.18 is Forensics & Grooki’s nebulous track entitled Spirits. Like a shadowy creature traversing the deepest realms of underground bass music, its presence is a dominating force, yet also commands emotion through subtlety and nuance.

Grooki increases the pressure with his VIP version of Night Train, juxtaposing monstrous low end with crisp, shuffling rhythms and an artful use of negative space. This haunting track is dark vibe.

Clicks & Whistles are causing quite a stir. Making their mark on the scene last year with the hit “Cranberry Goose” out on Distal’s Embassy Recordings. Most recently (meaning about an hour ago) the duo released a killer mix of forthcoming material on the most wicked Frite Nite podcast.

DNAE BEATS REMIX PACK:

I’m not sure if many of you are old enough for the Beastie Boys to have a serious impact in your musical taste or straight up childhood/teenage years. I know one thing, myself and all my friends are of that age and this news comes as a big blow to the gut. Our beloved MCA, Adam Yauch of the Beastie Boys has just passed away from his battle with cancer. Having lost a parent to cancer within the past 5 years, I can tell you that it’s never an easy process. I would like to extend my deepest condolences to Adam’s family and all his friends who have surrounded and loved him throughout his amazing life.

We’re not music journaliste or hip hop historians, but we’re serious music enthusiast and even if the news of Adam passing away has nothing to do with Dubstep music or culture. I find myself writing this post to help myself and hopefully others reflect and deal with the news of his demise.

My childhood and teenage years would no doubt have been bleak without the cultural influence of the Beastie Boys. Fun, upbeat, and sometimes weird – exactly how life should be. Long live the funk that Adam brought to the speakers and his mad vibes. <3

To finish, here are some of my favourite cuts from the Beastie Boys’ amazingly wild career (and not to assume it’s over – Beasties for life. I’ll support a tribute album for sure.)

This latest track is a beautiful, almost haunting one with its short, quick synths and clapping snares. This reworking of Cristian Dinamarca’s Needy track is not too far a cry from the original but features a much more “trapped” out feel than the original. It retains the songs basic structure but omits the tweaked female chipmunk-esque vocals for something a bit deeper that vibes much better with the heavy Clicks and Whistles basslines.

If you haven’t heard about Clicks and Whistles you need to get on it. With a soundcloud full of great trap and heavy, irregular bass tunes (many of which you can download for free), there’s no sense in missing out on these guys. And speaking of, if you’re in the area of Montreal we’re recommending that you go and hit up June 1st Heads Up night with not only Clicks and Whistles, but also EPROM and our homies the Wyld Stallyns (Construct and Harmsworth from JLD!). Freshly out this week is the full length debut album from Atlanta’s Distal on nothing but the mighty Tectonic Recordings. This beat wizard has been a favourite of this site for quite a while, most likely for his style and great sound but most definitely because he’s so hard to define. Drawing influences from the past and present, Distal’s sounds range from serious dubstep, to techno, acid, juke and jungle. All of which i’m sure you’ll hear bits of in this album. I have a great respect for artist who can cross over many different genres without changing their persona or image. Distal seems to do this with ease.

Distal releases his highly anticipated debut album ‘Civilization’ on Tectonic Recordings. For Distal, 28 year old Atlanta producer Michael Rathbun, ‘Civilization’ is the crowning point of his past two years of work. Releases and remixes for labels such as Soul Jazz Records, Grizzly, Fortified Audio, Trouble & Bass and Tectonic (not to mention his own imprint, Embassy Recordings, which he runs in tandem with old school friend Ethan Anderson aka Mite), and tours with Pearson Sound and Africa Hi Tech has seen his name on the lips of discerning electronic tastemakers worldwide.

Before entering the world of production, Distal spent a few years researching a sensational auditory phenomenon called Synesthesia at Georgia State University. One day while digging through break-core records he stumbled upon a sound that would inspire him to launch his production career. This record, in a turn of complete serendipity, was ‘Punisher’ by Tectonic label head Pinch. Using his newfound passion, traditional teachings and his scientific studies in unison he ran head first into the studio.

Taking influences from his love of techno, jungle and hardcore, Distal’s sound fluctuates between a wide array of moods, rhythms and tempos that veers between dubstep, juke, footwork, house and, naturally being from Atlanta, Southern hip hop. From popping 808 cowbells on opener ‘The Sun’ to dancehall minimalism in ‘Rattlesnake’ to the Balearic tribalism of ‘She Wears Pearls’; these elements join the dots on Distal’s map of ‘Civilization’.

Get the cannons ready as with little under five months to go before systems are warmed up, lights switched on and the gates are opened, Outlook presents some amazing new additions to the lineup. This year Outlook has gone even further to bring you some of the best in Dub, Reggae and Soundsystem culture. Added to the amazing artists in the Jamaican genre is a man whose name and image are deeply linked with the sound. With a career in music that dates back to the 50s, Lee Scratch Perry has had a massive impact on Jamaican culture and beyond. Perry has been the production powerhouse behind some massive names including Bob Marley & The Wailers. During the late 60s his experiments with studio equipment made Perry one of the founding fathers of Dub. Now residing in Switzerland, this influencer sets course for the coast of Croatia for Outlook 2012.

Supporting the Dub-father is an artist whose iconic voice has been sampled by The Prodigy and Jay-Z. With a career longer than the queue for the cash-machine on the Outlook campsite, Max Romeo has lived all over the globe and made a huge name for himself collaborating with Lee Scratch Perry, Rolling Stones and Jah Shaka to name but a few.

Another wizard in the studio joining the bill at Outlook is a British record producer who has been flying the Jamaican colours since the 1970s. Prince Fatty has not only worked with Reggae legends like Gregory Isaacs but has also dipped into Hip Hop working with The Pharcyde and The Sugarhill Gang. Now working with British talent Hollie Cook, Prince Fatty takes time from the studio and makes his way to the stage.

Shooting forward to the 21st century, Outlook welcomes back two regular features to our Croatian systems. Having cut his teeth on Kiss and pushed the boundaries between Grime and 2step, Plastican returns to top the madness! Also providing the weight of South London to the Adriatic, Chefal returns for another stint on the fort.

The east end of London has always been a hub for the creative and talented. This artist is no exception to the rule and has certainly managed to impress a few people with his latest release “Feel The Love”. Rudimental has managed to build a solid name for himself over the past couple of years and is set to be massive. If ever there was a debut performance from an artist you should see at Outlook this year it’s sure to be Rudimental.

Ensuring the presence of the grime factor, Outlook welcomes Trim to the fort for the first time. Originally a member of east London crew Roll Deep, Trim has made his name ring out across the Grime circuit recently as a solo artist. Trim has backed up his impressive string of mixtapes with recent appearances on productions from James Blake and Becoming Real with his unique flow.

Recently Doshy‘s been climbing higher and higher up my favourite artist list. It became quite apparent to me when I realized that his tracks have been in most of my recorded mixes in the past year or so. (my latest mix: Let’s Get Weird) Oh, and did I mention this guy is signed to all my favourite labels: Rwina Records, Robox Neotech (Doshy’s label), Planet Mu, Slit Jockey, Lowriders Collective and the list goes on.

BIO:

A look at Doshy’s website reveals a rather horrifying flashing .GIF wallpaper, and the decidedly unsubtle, blinding and even offensive nature of it all nicely delineates his music — dude isn’t afraid to be vivacious.  Based in Berlin — not exactly the first place you might expect prime grime/dubstep-fusion and toxic Southern bounce to come from — he’s been making music for at least ten years, he’s a self-described lover of “colours,” which comes through in his playful but weighty productions.  His earlier releases came on small niche labels like Destpub and his own Robox-Neotech, and his debut for Rwina was essentially a coming-out event, earning lavish praise from FACT and Sonic Router among others, also the big international DJ’s had this one for quite a while in their playlists.  Straining italo horror influences on the Goblin-inspired “Suspiria,” it’s at once a stunning and faithful interpolation of unusual tropes into a dubstep template and so well-produced it wouldn’t be any less great even if it weren’t so innovative.  High production values, a deeply-ingrained sense of melody, and playful experimentation all make for one hell of a producer.  Be on the look-out for his second EP on Amsterdam’s Rwina, expect fresher and on-point music from this German beat maestro.

Our good friend and Montreal bass elite, Living~Stone is in full swing for a great year of releases. From last year’s signing to Mochipet’s DalyCity Records based in San-Francisco, and now more west coast support from East Van Digital based in Vancouver, Canada. I’ve heard a few choice WIP recently, and I can tell you the production train doesn’t stop here.

Da Coldest EP touches all sorts of BPM and influences reaching from Garage to Dubstep to Breaks all mixed and blending through Living~Stone refined palette. A well put together package which lends itself to many situations. Big ups to all the Montreal heads involved in this release including The Gulf Stream, 11:11 and Vipond.

Lorn returns with a new full-length album, his debut on Ninja Tune, and it’s a huge stride forward since Nothing Else (released on Brainfeeder, June 2010). Listening back to his first album, Lorn says it now seems “cold and strict.” Ask The Dust, on the other hand, is “haunted, oily, smeared,” and with this description he captures something of the intensely felt, visceral aliveness of the music.

Since the release of Nothing Else, Lorn has toured the world alongside the likes of Mary Anne Hobbs, Amon Tobin, and GonjaSufi to name a few. He became a devout owner of a B5 A4, and much like his dedication to music and art, wasted no time tearing it apart in order to learn how to put it all back together again. Ask The Dust suggests he’s learnt to do much the same with his emotions

Underground / (Paul Woolford Remix) – Komonazmuk – HENCH

This one didn’t immediately rotate into my playlist, as Jakes’ label has up-til-now been associated with the more abrasive, aggy side of dubstep. Luckily, I didn’t sleep on this for long, and within 7 seconds of playing the original I was grinning like an idiot. Throwback vibes abound on this one, with nostalgic samples of news broadcasts woven together to form phrases dangerously close to sing-a-longs. The rhythms are a combination of UKG and good ol’ electro, straightforward and deadly. The swelling bassline is funky as hell, a patchwork of several synths, and a squelcher of a lead in the second half is pure 80’s. On the flip, Woolford morphs the original into a cold, alien techno-house number, channeling equal parts Untold and Joe. This version is all about the pressure, with pounding low toms and a generous dose of clean sub-bass for that bigroom feel. Hats off to Jakes for signing these, especially the original, which along with Presk’s “Hesitate” is one of the most memorable and catchy records of the year.

Hesitate / Kook – Presk – Fourth Wave

Ramp imprint Fourth Wave has yet to drop the ball, and thus I was very excited for Presk’s return to the label. “Hesitate” fuses the irresistible rhythms of UKG (listen to that 32nd note hi-hat roll!) with the best bassline since “Fill My Coffee.” In many ways, “Hesitate” seems a cousin of that anthem, with several elements playing call and response, including a whistling lead, a swelling guitar, and a crooning female sample. The boogie levels are at 150%, and in honesty, the tune has enough hooks for a handful of records. Instead of spreading them out, though, Presk goes all in, creating the most hum-able tune of the year so far. “Kook” on the flip ain’t shabby, either, with slightly warped piano stabs syncopating about a straight-forward UKG beat. Ethereal pads and a warm, deep house bassline fill out the spectrum, but the interesting part is the Breakfast Club sample, injecting an otherwise harmless cut with just enough uncertainty to avoid mindless relaxation. That said, this one really is all about side A, which I truly consider my favorite track of 2012 so far.

Yeh Come Dance – Gerry Read – Delsin

Chances are you’ve heard of certified Wunderkind Gerry Read, so I’ll spare you the introductions. He truly outdid himself on his recent EP for Delsin, with four cuts of dusty house music. The title track grinds along to lo-fi hats and a lo-passed snare, layering a few kicks to fill out the groove. The meat on the bones comes via a nondescript vocal snippet—filtered to virtuosic effect—and a sampled stab, helping to make this one perhaps the warmest track on the record. Next up is the cheekier “Crawlspace,” bumping along with a pinch of swagger as gossamer pads are joined by the disembodied voice that Read is so fond of employing. The low end here is a thing of beauty, with Read utilizing not one, not two, but three kicks, below which he eventually adds some serious sub-bass, pushing the most air since DMZ006. “Bozza” starts off a bit Skudge-y, with a hollow kick and a pitched hi-tom, before getting a bit jazzier, with syncopated rimshots and shuffling, hard-panned hats. A mover of a bassline keeps the energy up while a single piano note rings out again and again, counterpointed by a mumbling sample. Rounding out the EP is “Crooked,” the most aggressive cut on the EP, with harsh hats and a no-nonsense snare. Read stretches the tune to palpable tension, before releasing some serious groove via parlor-esque samples and a simple yet soulful bassline. While none of these bits are your typical floor material, any could easily destroy one in the proper context, and “Crooked” most easily of them all. To sum up: low slung, bass-heavy whisper house from a talent of seemingly unending depth. Essential listening.

Kieran Hebden is without a doubt one of the most diverse musicians London has produced and has played a huge role in some of the most memorable music the city has created. Known to many as Four Tet, Hebden has a career that dates back to the late 90’s with a string of impressive albums on Domino Records. Drawing elements from Folk, Jazz, Electronica and Hip Hop, Hebden has worked with a wide range of artists from MF Doom to Radiohead. Currently living in New York, Four Tet sets sail for Croatia for a highly anticipated live performance.

Embracing the raw energy from live music, Dimensions welcomes a Mercury prize nominated four-piece band. Formed in East London, Portico Quartet have a delicate and cinematic sound drawing influence from a wide rage of genres, encompassing both acoustic and electronic elements. Another great British act to perform this year have travelled the globe with their impressive live show and have certainly made their mark on the Bass music community. Signed to the prestigious Hotflush Recordings, Mount Kimbie bring the full live set up to Dimensions.

Tom Middelton is an artist who is no stranger to all things deep and wonderful. Prolific during the 90’s as an ambient producer, Middelton is also well versed in House and Electro. This September Middelton joins Dimensions as Sounds Of the Cosmos, his new label which showcases a variety of styles all of which fit in perfectly with the vibe of the festival. Glasgow has always produced exceptional talent and Koreless is by far the city’s hottest new contributor. His break through moment was back in 2011 with his track “4D’ which saw appreciation from Benji B and numerous Dj’s on Rinse FM.

Alongside the live acts added, Dimensions boasts some of the greatest DJ’s from Europe and America. New York’s Morgan Geist of Metro Area joins Norwegian Disco prince Todd Treje, Swedish Deep House don Axel Boman and Spanish melancholic master, John Talabot.

Due to the capacity and scale of lineup at Dimensions not everyone will have the pleasure of attending. Boasting a cutting-edge line-up and intimate setting, Dimensions has quickly become one of the most anticipated events of the summer amongst dedicated underground music lovers. Well known to many as a veteran grime instrumentalist, Mitch has definitely broken boundaries with his latest release Venus. To quote directly, “in Volume 1 of Searching Mr. Mitch explores the theme of love and relationships.”

Hold on, grime and love? Tracks like “Rose and Wine” and “Hydrogen Fuel” definitely show Mitch’s deep exploration with its smooth sub and beautiful synth lines that drive it all home. “The Clock’s Broke” contains eery vocal cuts that add a beautiful kind of mystery to the album on a whole. “M42” ‘s grainy synth adds for a very playful vibe similarly to “Jacob/Milo.” Perhaps the heaviest, if one can use the word heavy at all for this release, is “New Day” and it’s massive kick, snare and sub-line, yet is kept mellow through the head-bobbing synth.

In a time where grime is becoming increasingly popular, Mr Mitch has shown that the genre has a lot more to offer. Usually dominated by heavy hitting or garage-y instrumentals, it is clear that some artists will decide to switch it up and experiment with new sounds. Venus is one of these starts in experimentation and could not have produced a more beautiful product. Through his exploration, Mitch has shown that there is definitely a softer side to grime. With new producers coming around, it’s safe to say that this year will be a big year for grime as well as for Mr Mitch.

19 year old Birmingham-based producer, James Stanley AKA Hijinkx, got his initial breakthrough in 2009 with Radio1′s Drum ‘N Bass heavyweights, Fabio and Grooverider, giving his track ‘Quick Change’ a worldwide audience for the first time. AxH, (formerly Grizzly), has been dedicated to bass music and DJ-ing for over a decade. Based in Boston, MA, AxH got his start as Prodigal Son, producing Ragga Jungle that received praise and plays all over the world. He has been releasing music digitally and on wax since 2004, and has played coast to coast in North America, supporting his releases. 2008 saw AxH perform in Kiev, Ukraine, a set that people are still talking about today.

He has become a prolific producer as he’s honed his deep, dark, and heavy style. His debut Dubstep album is due out on Brooklyn based TUBA Records this spring.  AxH is one of the residents for BASSIC Boston, (Boston’s premiere Dubstep night), where he can be heard dropping entire sets of his original tracks. Tre Mission is no new kid on the block. Having been on the Grime scene for some time now, Mission has become a solid imprint as an international MC of the genre. Winds of Mission’s coming came from Youtube freestyles over such tunes as Sukh Knight‘s “Diesel Not Petrol” as well as S-X‘s “Woo Riddim.” In the past year, Mission was featured on LOTM3 and also released his first EP “Maxin’ Everything“. More recently, we have seen Mission work with one of grime’s freshest producers Preditah with a tune entitled “Rate Me A Bit” (DL here). I was lucky to get the chance to ask Tre Mission a few questions.

Rob Carle: How did you first hear about “grime?”

Tre Mission: I first heard about Grime when I was about 13 from a program on Much Music called “The Wedge.” Although I can’t actually say that I had HEARD ABOUT it technically, because I didn’t know what it was. I started to learn about Grime and its roots a couple of years later when my friend sent me some music from Wiley and Boy Better Know.

RC: What got you started?

TM: I couldn’t even tell you what got me started in music because I’ve been doing this for as long as I can remember. I started writing rhymes when I was about six years old, started producing at age 11, but I’ve been playing instruments and making music from since even before that. I was mostly inspired to start spitting by my uncles and other older dudes in my hood that were doing the same, but I started taking it really seriously when I was about 17 and I met my mentor Sunny who provided me with a space and the tools to create and record music.

RC: And how did you come up with “Tre Mission?”

TM: It basically started as a joke as I was trying to make a transition from a really bad rap name, but it stuck and here I am today.

RC: What have you been up to lately?

TM: Ever since I came back from England again in October, I’ve just been hard at work on my new album called “Malmaison Project.” It’s my first full release and it should be out sometime during the second half of the year. We’ve already shot a couple of videos but there’s still a lot of work to do, and I can guarantee this is a solid project. I have a team I work with that operates under the name “No Such Thing” and we cover every aspect. So, from artwork, to photography, to videos, etc, it will all be in house. That’s part of my reason behind the title of the album. Originally it was going to be called just “Malmaison” but this feels like more of an art project to me because at the end of the day what I’m giving to the people: art. Sprinkle in a few shows here and there, Toronto life, assorted drugs and alcohol and you’ve got the last six months or so of my life.

RC: How is the scene in TO?

TM: Personally I’ve never really put any focus into creating a scene of any sort in Toronto because I got to eat and my people got to eat. So that’s the main priority is getting my messages and my story out to the world and keeping my people fed. Toronto is a place where you can’t force-feed the people anything. N****s been trying that for years and it hasn’t worked. No matter how many cars you rent, no matter how much money or Gucci you put in your video if your music is not undeniable, chances are you won’t pop off in Toronto. Later on in my career when I have the resources and the influence, maybe I’ll try to start up some club nights or something but that’s only if I’m not too busy taking over the world.

RC: Has Lord Of The Mics been a good experience? How has it been to be from somewhere different than where grime is really present?

TM: Yeah man, LOTM3 was a good experience all around. I had fun doing it. I gained new fans and met new people so I’m happy. Shout out Ratty just because.

RC: What’s the beef with Jendor about? Who would you say took that face-off?

TM: No beef at all. Jendor’s perfectly cool. He’s an MC, I’m an MC, and we’re both confident in our abilities so we took the challenge. I definitely had him sweating in the basement (lol).

RC: How do the next couple of months look for you?

TM: I’m still going to be working on the album…so going to be in studio a whole lot. More traveling, more music, more money. That’s all it is right now.

RC: Any collabs you can let us in on? We’ve already seen a collab with Preditah.

TM: I can’t really give anything away right now but one thing you can count on is Deeco productions, and if you don’t know about Deeco already, go look that n**** up!

RC: Which emcees and producers are you looking at for the coming year?

TM: Right now I’m not really paying attention to most of what’s going on in the music world but in my playlist is mostly Merky Ace and Kendrick Lamar. I like what Labrinth is doing right now as well, he’s a beast.

RC: You produce as well (on tracks like “Woken Up“), will we be seeing more productions?

TM: Yes, definitely. Majority of my album so far is my own production. It’s crazy because I’m only twenty years old and I’ve been producing for roughly nine years yet a lot of my fans don’t even know how deep I’m into it, so I’m glad I have the opportunity to use “Malmaison Project” to showcase that.

RC: What kind of music are you into (aside from grime)?

TM: Aside from Grime, I’m into everything probably, only excluding Reggaeton and Country, But then again there are a couple Reggaeton bangers I remember from back in the day (lol).

RC: Any shout outs?

TM: Shout out the whole No Such Thing team, shout out the S-Star UK team because they’re still a BIG fundamental part of my movement and most importantly shout out to the Fans.

BIO BLIPS:

Michael Red, aka Souns, is a Vancouver based music producer, performer, DJ and event organizer. Michael is the founding member of Lighta! Sound, acting captain of the
Low Indigo ship, regular collaborator with Tanya Tagaq,
and music curator for New Forms Festival.

Together with Lighta! Sound, having played and/or helped organize the majority of Vancouver’s major dubstep events 2005-2009, Michael’s played a pivotal role in shaping the city’s internationally recognized dubstep/bass scene. Taking the lead role in seminal events at the Red Gate, Secret Location events, ‘All Systems Special’, and (together with NFF) the landmark ‘Dubforms’ series. Over the past year Michael has been cultivating a newer sound/movement under the Low Indigo banner. Through ongoing events, a casual blog, DJ mixs and upcoming music releases – Low Indigo stands to make a similar mark in Vancouver’s post-dubstep landscape as Lighta! has within the (still thriving) dubstep/bass scene.

Michael is also known for his continued musical collaboration with acclaimed Inuit throat singer Tanya Tagaq. Touring internationally with Tanya regularly, Michael plays ableton ‘live’ with several midi-controllers and keyboards, while performing live manipulations and FX on Tanya’s voice. A good portion of the material used for this project was developed from field recordings collected from Tanya’s Arctic home. Rhythms made from wind and ice, bass from the earth and rocks, and melodies made from birds and running water. Michael put together a note worthy solo installation using these altered sounds from the north, set in a room designed to feel nostalgically comfortable, called ‘A Time and a Place’ for Code:Live (Vancouver, 2010).

As a live performer, Michael combines his “sound art” side with his summed DJ experience – blending layered atmospheres, subtle details, and improvised manipulations with a dance floor sensibility. Upfront beats can quickly scatter to polyrhythmic tangents and back again. Nearly untraceable pulses can eventually merge to create fully living and breathing landscapes. Playing more with the tension side of tension-and-release is common theme, along with an ever present dub-wise approach to FX, bass, and overall treatment.

Michael’s bass music sets can vary greatly in tempo and feel – traversing the many modes of dubstep, future and roots dub, heaters, select rap and modern r’n'b cuts, dancehall fusions, post-dubstep and genre-less music in between. Whatever the flavors being played, one almost in-escapable common thread is dub soundsystem mentality. unplanned experiments and risks, echo, delay and space.. deep space.. deep water. it can get as emotional as it can get hype.

As a respected reggae dancehall DJ, Michael was a long time resident at the legendary ‘Bruk Out’ weekly, and is currently a regular at ‘Anza Reggae Madness’ and ‘Thursday Ting’, the city’s longest now-running dancehall weekly.

In previous years, Michael also made solid contributions to Vancouver’s “ambient/etc” music community through event organizing and performances under his ‘Souns’ moniker – of which he is still quite active with. Notable events from that era being the ‘Environments’ series, the ‘Fire Light Lullabies’ weekly, and the ‘open/inputs’ monthly.

After creating a buzz in the Bass Music community it’s time to spill the beans and announce the second wave of acts joining the Outlook lineup. Welcoming back some familiar faces along with newcomers, established headliners and classic pioneers, Outlook Festival proudly presents its broad spectrum of acts.

Kicking off the proceedings is a name that has been around since the very beginning of Outlook and who has played a massive part in the music we love. Skream is undoubtedly one of the biggest names in modern dance music and an artist that has been a regular feature on the Outlook lineup. Anyone that has attended previous years will be aware of the hype surrounding Skream and his high-energy performances. His incredible versatility ranges through many genres and finds a comfortable home across main stages, boat parties and more intimate surroundings. Back for the 4th time, Outlook Festival proudly announce, Skream.

Set in the breathtaking abandoned Fort Punta Christo, the Outlook site looks like something from another world. By far one of the most unique festival sites in Europe, Outlook is located on the northern coast of Croatia and is surrounded by crystal clear Adriatic waters. Outlook boasts the best location for sun soaked beach parties and all night raving till sunrise in the Fort. The legendary Outlook boat parties will also be setting sail with some of the most exciting names in Bass Music and Soundsystem Culture!

Looking back to the foundations of Dub and Reggae, Outlook announce a very special duo. Founded by brothers Norman and Ralston Grant in Jamaica during the late 1960s, the Twinkle Brothers became an instant hit. Since then they have created their own Twinkle label and helped to build over 60 albums with collaborators. On stage the Twinkle Brothers have gained global recognition with Norman as the energetic front man along side Ralston driving their rich sound.

Just in case you’ve forgotten, Drum and Bass plays a massive role in the Outlook lineup and its time to add two of the genres finest. Easily one of Brazil’s finest musical exports and a global star, DJ Marky jets to Croatia this summer. Fusing the music of his Latin American upbringing with sounds from London is what gave this DJ a unique sound within the scene. In 2002 his single “LK” entered the UK charts making DJ Marky one of the most popular DJs at the time. This amazing talent oozes sunshine and will sound truly special in Croatia.

Another global super star Outlook will be welcoming is one of the most revered names in Drum and Bass. Descriptions like high-energy and excitement don’t even come close to the devastation Andy C is known for causing. When not travelling the globe tearing dancefloors apart Andy C takes time to pass on his knowledge at Oxford University. With nearly two decades of DJing behind him, who better to tear up the main stage at Outlook this summer?

Experience counts for a lot and for the second time Outlook Festival opens the fort to an extraordinary artist that has inspired listeners for two decades. Zinc began his musical journey back in the early 90’s in London when fusions of Hardcore and Ragga became known as Jungle. In this new genre Zinc built himself a solid reputation that has continued through to the present day. Not only prolific in the realms of DnB but also in the modern sounds of London’s underground scene. Now turning his focus to styles such as Garage, Breakbeat, and Bass, Zinc founded his own unique flex known as Crack House.

One of the biggest names in UK Funky will be joined on stage by a singer who has found a way to compliment the emerging British genre perfectly. No performance would be as better suited to sunshine when Roska & Jamie take to the stage at Outlook this year.

Another duo that Outlook are proud to announce have just finished touring with SBTRKT as his supporting act. Hailing from the creative source that is Croydon, Disclosure join the bill at Outlook Festival. Comprised of two young brothers, Disclosure have made an impressive entrance on to the Bass Music atlas with taste makers like Benji B and Mary Anne Hobbs backing releases. At the ages of 16 and 19 we can’t wait to see what the pair have in store for the future and for their debut performance at Outlook.

Outlook have always been firmly behind up and coming UK Hip Hop. This year Outlook presents one of the most exciting acts to have appeared in some time. The Four Owls make their debut appearance at Outlook alongside some of the Hip Hop greats already confirmed for this year. Fliptrix, Verb T, BVA and Leaf Dog make up the hottest new UK Hip Hop with more onstage energy than a Mediterranean thunderstorm.

With so many stages at Outlook it only seems fair to lend them to some friends for the night to take care of. Founded in 1994 Metalheadz is soon to release its 100th record and has brought through some of the best producers around. Label boss Goldie will see support from the likes of dBridge, Lenzman, Jubei, Calyx, Teebee and MC Lowqui. Our second takeover comes from London pirate radio institution Rinse FM. Gracing this stage will be some of its finest DJs that include N-Type, Oneman, Zinc, Marcus Nasty, Roska and P Money. Another highly subscribed takeover is always the Shogun Audio Stage brought to you by label boss DJ Friction. Joining him are a force of DJs that include Spectrasoul, Icicle, Alix Perez, Rockwell and SP:MC as your host.

This year Outlook is going out of its way to bring you the biggest names and the most cutting edge sounds around. Expect the best and remember to keep your eyes peeled for more information on our lineup as more news is released.

“Since the world drifts into delirium, we must adopt a delirious point of view” said the French philosopher Jean Baudrillard. This quote serves as a perfect jump off point into the musical world of Eprom, an American West Coast producer whose music is as colourful and delirious as the imagined psychedelic science fiction worlds created by the artist Moebius, an important influence on Eprom’s own psychedelic productions.

Metahuman is Eprom’s debut album to be released this spring on Dutch label Rwina – Eprom’s main home over the last few years. In the artist’s own words Metahuman is “about the next stage of human evolution – something that will come after the modern human.” This futuristic science fiction idea, and its influences, grounds Metahuman’s musical offerings in a space that is far removed from our current reality yet inevitably linked to it. As William Burroughs once said “if you cut open the present, the future bleeds out” and so the music you’ll hear on this album is inspired by a possible future but is made today and consumed today, most appropriately in the dark corners of a dancefloor where a finely tuned sound system will allow your mind and body to fully appreciate the sonic subtleties and physical pressures the young producer puts forward on Metahuman.

13 tracks long, Metahuman is a bold statement of intent that is quite clearly aimed at the dancefloor first and foremost though it still manages to function outside of it as Eprom balances more tender and thoughtful moments alongside lashings of boisterous musical bravado.

The album opens with Honey Badger and Regis Chillbin two of Eprom’s most popular dancefloor numbers that have been centrepieces of his live sets and have received support from fellow dancefloor wrecking luminaries such as the Gaslamp Killer. Tracks like Prototype and Can Control meanwhile offer a more subdued though no less potent take on eyes-down dancefloor meditation, utilising in the case of the former a rather powerful mood-setting, atmospheric intro and in the case of the latter chopped up vocal samples from hip hop and Jamaican music. Floating Palace re-appropriates hip hop’s swing for space hopping aliens in the year 3030 while Transparency is one of the album’s mellower moments slotted half-way through as a sort of breather. Variations hints at pop friendliness in the saturated synth melodies and bouncy swing of its backing rhythms, a feeling that Eprom subtly carries into Love Number where it’s fused with another rhythm that clearly tips its hat to hip hop. The energy is ramped up once more on Sun Death, The Golden Planet and Needle Thrasher bringing the listener towards the album’s conclusion on a bed of delirious takes of what constitutes dancefloor friendly melodies, rhythms and compositions today. Raytracing quietly closes the book by flipping many of the elements Eprom uses throughout into a more delicate lullaby, perfect for sending a present-day visitor back to his own time having tasted the reality of Eprom’s imagined future.

As with previous releases Metahuman has roots in hip hop which Eprom twists to refine a modern take on the genre’s timeless aesthetics that bleeds effortlessly into electronic and dance music. Using a sort of condensed bass minimalism as the glue that ties Metahuman together Eprom manipulates established concepts and expectations of tension and release in ways that are refreshing and bring life to the music. There is at times a lot going on, some of it obvious and some less so, yet repeated listens will afford clarity and uncover a beauty in these beats that shines as bright as some of Moebius’ most striking works.

MalLabel resident Skulltrane provides a bit of her token mojo in the mechanical and slithery “Time Machine,” while El Diablo & Mycho kick out a hyphy bouncer with their track “Little Pills.”

Releases of this size can often become less a listening exercise than a simple pocket of different bits of music, but Saucerface 2 is a true music lover’s comp. This compilation is 25 tracks than you can set on repeat and let define the backdrop of your springtime. From start to finish, Saucerface 2 is a testimony to the veracity and staying power of MalLabel music, now living out its third year in full effect with a release schedule that would whet the appetite of any bass junky who could catch.

Her Honey Dripping Behind EP – Samoyed – Glum

The greatest thing about the EDM scene at-large adopting an (un)official No Rules policy is that producers can make whatever the hell they want and we, the humble audience, will probably get to hear it. Samoyed’s recent EP on Lukid’s Glum imprint is a living, beating testament to the ultimate freedom in contemporary electronic music. The title track combines Untoldian percussion with those ramping chords James Blake and other wonk-heads made us fall in love with. “Cherry Ripe” is a soca-tinged jaunt along hand-drum avenue, teasing the sophisticates with orchestral samples on the perimeters. “Klondike Avenue” kicks off near David Kennedy’s house and ends up somewhere between Lone and Hessle Audio. Finally, “A Small Good Thing” closes out this spectacular EP with some soulful vocal chops, white-noise claps, and a bobbling bassline. Oh, and swing. Lots and lots of swing. Have fun! I know I did.

Hideout EP – Genotype – Deca Rhythm

Some may recognize the name, and with good reason. Genotype has been killing it in the DnB scene for years with his stripped-down, tribalist take on the style. You’ll find no 170 here, however; like recent releases by Kamikaze Space Programme—AKA Raiden, another DnB stalwart—the Hideout EP sees Genotype instead stepping into that hazy area between house and techno… to particularly choice results. “Red Bass” is all ‘verb-n-acid, while “Bondage” bobs below a gossamer arp on a minimalistic rhythm, booting up a rumbler complete with some robotic wobble. “Injury Time” is the meanest cut, with a rough-edged big-room bassline and phantasmal FX hovering around every corner. The title track leads us into a dark de-pressurization chamber, and it is here that the DnB background is most evident, in the form of smooth yet rib-rattling sub-bass. Bump this one in abso darkness for full effect.

No Sleep EP – Desto – Rwina

No one has been releasing quality beats music like Rwina, building an impressive roster over the past year, including Eprom, NastyNasty, and of course, Desto. With his second EP in 8 months (check last year’s Makowrap), Desto again proves he’s on top of the 808 game. The title track filters an ethereal hook to full ripeness while a sparse rhythm locks in the groove. “Shadow Sole” is on an araabMUZIK tip, touting a vaguely Hoover bassline and bright arpeggiators, while “Monsters About” channels its fair share of Joker with purple harmonies and that distortion-crushed swag we’ve all come to love. “Can’t Take It” is perhaps the most unique of the tunes here, with an acidic line morphing in and out of full-on womp mode. Necks beware.

We’ve been busy, so time to catch up with some big quality releases by the Dub Cartel camp. A few releases have slipped by the blog because of time restraints but any regular listener of my radio show or live sets have been getting an ear full of these serious bass growlers! They are definitely building up a strong portfolio for 2012.

Let’s start with a forthcoming release by The S.K., a two track EP which is featured in all my recent and upcoming sets. Definitely a go to track to get the dance floor rumbling with people. Here is a little sneak preview:

Up next we’ve got Benzmixer‘s Waterworx EP. A new artist who emerged last year with a quite surprising style, he’s back on it again but this time on a deeper tip! Frankly, I was quite surprised and happy to hear this EP at first. It wasn’t what I had expected from Benzmixer – but these are all good signs of a well-rounded artist. Well worth a listen.

Up next we’ve got a new comer to the Dub Cartel family, Damnesia Vu with a dirty, wet, skank-out EP dubbed Straight From The Curb. You know this is how we get down! Enough said… listen up!

Last but not least is young gun assasin Moth coming back to the cartel for his second EP currently exclusive to Beatport till the end of March. The Moth EP is a three track EP that hits the grind and hard. If you want to ruff up some peeps, look no further.

Man, time flies fast! As I sit on my roof top looking at the Montreal skyline I have to stop and wonder how did winter blow by so fast?! Was it the immense amount of shows Montreal had to offer during the cold winter season – or is it mother nature tricking us to believe these wonderful March days at 20 degrees celcius could really exist and stay with us till April? Either way, things move fast and sometimes we don’t have time to cover all the releases we’d like to talk about.

So lets take a look back at last week with this great new EP release by Cato on the Inna Riddim label. But I’ve got admit I’m rather lost for words here sitting in the sun, so i’ll let the PR sheet describe the EP in details. Enjoy!

PR WORDS:

‘Funky Steppa’ combines a cinematic expansiveness with enough gnarly bass and crunchy beats to energise anyone with a pulse. Plenty of dramatic switch-ups make this a great one to double-drop in the mix; it’s no mere DJ tool, though, but a finely-crafted tune that stands strong in its own right. Descending piano triplets setup the mood, and a melody line emphasising the down-beat carries the tune from a hulking halfstep to the driving rhythm that provides the core of this track.

On the most restrained track of the EP, ‘Abstract Thoughts’, Cato’s characteristically clipped snares are accompanied by reverb-soaked brushed hats. A series of minor key trills, perforated by a noise gate, evoke the rarified serenity of Oriental instrumentation; then the lead synth comes in, and we go from Far East to the west: a purple funk line reminiscent of Bristol.

‘Make it Grimey’ is upfront, raw and in your face. The buzzing lead thrashes back and forth like a dropped fire hose blasting out jets of sound. A spliced vocal snippet declares that ‘whatever I play, it’s got to be…grimey’ and that’s Cato’s watchword for this track: even in the quieter moments, stripped back to off-beat bass stabs and a halfstep, delayed snares echoing in the expanse, there’s a menace lurking in the horror-movie pads, and when that compulsive buzz returns for the second drop, its potency is doubled by a contrasting, detuned twin. It’s controlled chaos, and Cato delivers on his promise: grimey as the grit on your granddad’s grizzly bits.

‘Dizzy Cow’ is the joker of the pack, it’s theoretically a 4×4 tune, but there’s nothing predictable about it: swung hard with a swagger, compulsively syncopated and augmented with plenty of off-kilter percussion, it’s the kind of tune to play if you can’t make up your mind between party-starting and daringly original—because it’s both. In this case, polyrhythmic audacity doesn’t mean goatee-stroking appreciation while leaning against the bar; it means getting up and dancing on it. Rhythmic excess of the most playful and anarchic kind.

Black Rainbows EP – Dark Sky – Black Acre

The genre-bending trio returns to Black Acre with another offering of their unique brand of UK bass music. All four tunes are spectacular, an achievement in itself in an increasingly saturated scene. “F_Technology” channels some serious Swamp81 vibes as it jostles through mechanical effects with a pulsing acid line. A simple 3-note idea slowly lifts its head on the break, submerging the rest of the tune to a subdued close. “Tremor” kicks like the bigger brother of last year’s smasher “High Rise,” as a pitch bent hand drum, tribal percussion, and thundering kick build a jacking groove from the ground up, only to erupt after 3-full minutes into a seismic floor killer. “Zoom” floats in unassumingly on some spooky pads and pizzicato strings, but wastes no time in locking into an infectious 2-step shuffle. The phrasing here keeps it interesting, as the fatty bassline filters and writhes from assault mode into deeper GoldFFinchian territory. Rounding out the EP is “Totem,” the most melodic and least aggressive of the bunch, but nevertheless appealing in its sweeping pads and bubbling, distant lead synth. Verdict: Four seriously deadly cuts from a trio that never disappoints.

“Memories” – LAS – Black Box / Box Clever

I personally had been waiting for this single for the better part of 3 months, getting my fix from the brief samples on Chemical. Black Box and their 10” imprint Box Clever remain the champions of 140 bass music, pushing the purest and heaviest dubstep this side of ’06 DMZ, an era that would have seen these two tunes praised as anthems. “Memories” evokes pure meditation: bells and chimes echo into infinite space, and expert hat-work weaves us towards the inevitable: a gentle apocalypse of a bassline, wobble as Jah intended it. As nameless voices lament the past, try not to lose yourself. ’06 is long gone, but the present’s not too shabby.

“The Courts” – Jam City – Night Slugs

There is much to be said about Jam City. Born and raised by Night Slugs, the man’s music sounds like a fun-house mirror orgy of UK garage, electro, hip-hop, and Baltimore club. His synths are alien spacecraft humming to life. But most importantly, Jam City knows what the club needs, and in the case of his recent white label, it’s the most unapologetically left-field banger I’ve heard in recent years. Relentless handclaps? Check. Metallic grinds, clangs, and scrapes? Check. Pounding Baltimore kicks? Check. The sneaker squeaks are of course at center stage, while JC goads us with teases of a 303 line and some brief humanity via cosmic pads. All in all, “The Courts” is a 6-minute dive into an intergalactic All-Star basketball game—think Space Jam, but with more raving and less Wayne Knight.

As the founder of Ram Records Andy C was extremely influential on my electronic music education. Origin Unknown’s (Andy C and Ant) – Valley of the Shadows was on the first electronic music CD I ever bought, purchased for me by my dad when I was in Grade 8.
The following year I saw Andy destroy his set at Turbo (I was WAY to young to be in the club) and that set stayed ingrained in my memory and was a source of continued inspiration for all my years of DJing to come.

In 2002 I sold my guitar to purchase my first turntable, I could only afford the one. Since i was dying to learn how to mix, i had to hook up my walkman to the amp along with the turntable. That’s the year Andy C’s ‘Nightlife’ mix CD came out. So i would annoy my roommate hours on end attempting to beat match to the mix, one day something clicked i could do it, Andy C taught me how to mix!

On March 22nd not only do I get to see Andy C play live, I get to DJ on the very same line up! To say I’m excited would be a HUGE understatement. He is one of the biggest influences in my DJ career. Basically if i chose basketball as a career, this would be like playing on Michael Jordan’s team for a game. A decade later things have come full circle, hopefully he will teach me a few new tricks.

Corey K and I have been friends for over 10 years and over those years we had a lot of conversations about how we wanted to see in DJ in Montreal and though a lot of names came up during those chats, we always came to one conclusion: The artist we wanted and needed to have here most was Andy C.

Andy C made his mark on Drum & Bass, both internationally as a professional and for me as a listener, by not only by performing as a DJ at a skill level that few DJs I have seen in the last 15 years can match, but also by founding one of the most influential Drum & Bass record labels of all time, Ram Records. Ram Records was and remains *the* go to label for upfront DnB Sounds courtesy of some of the biggest names in the game as well as the best and brightest from the new generation of producers.

As to be expected, his set was riff with unreleased tunes, yet he has expanded his selection far beyond dubstep, dropping gems from the likes of Dream Continuum to EPROM and beyond, much to my pleasure.

But before that, I hadn’t seen Dave spin since Unsound NYC 2010 so I wasn’t quite sure what he or the 200 person room would be looking for. I had 3 hours to really think about it as I drove from Vermont to Boston (I really just listened to Kimbra – Vows on repeat). What resulted was a spontaneous mix that took full advantage of Good Life’s chest-rattling soundsystem and the open-minded thirst of the packed dancefloor. In retrospect, it’s a fairly accurate look inside the menacing dilemmas of “future bass” – how does one stroke one’s beard while making a solid white-boy go at footwork? Or even worse, when will the irony of retro sounds and future sounds being relatively identical become too heavy to bear?

So our homie from Mushpost, who is holding down every permutation of bass music in Burlington, VT, came down to open up for Dave Q at Boston’s premiere dubstep night, BASSIC. Playing for 90 minutes, The Orator claimed domain on the Good Life’s dungeon floor with a refreshing display of genre-defying forward-thinking bass music that fulfilled the body whilest engaging the intellect. I’d never heard anything like it in Boston actually (and the dude’s from friggin’ Vermont)! Cheers to The Orator for holding the bar and possibly raising it for headliners to come.

Some words from the man himself on the set:
“There is a certain maintained disdain for digital DJs, and rightfully so. There isn’t much palatable energy, that heat-of-the-moment glory, that comes from pre-planned sets with dissected songs. The introduction of [insert-moderately-famous-producer]‘s Ableton DJ set skyrocketed its use by the impressionable college youth in their eternal search to be the life of the party. But as a man who knew Ableton via production and was making ambient soundscapes on the radio with odd vinyl, random CDs and self-made loops, I started DJing with it as way to further control the sound, reinforced by the lack of funds to pursue the traditional means. Aside from beat matching, one must still have beyond excellent selection that maintains a sense of narrative as well as be able to line up phrases, harmonize and so much more. But ultimately, you have to be able to let the music and the dance floor guide the direction of the mix and that is where preplanned sets fail. I try to take advantage of being relieved of beat matching and it is my hope that that comes through. I hope to validate the digital DJs who only wish to take advantage of the technology in their passionate campaign to share, in creative ways, the music they love.”

The State of Dub-Step These Days

Talk about a subject that is beat to death. weather your an old school purist or a kid just fresh to the scene, you have an opinion. And no one wants to hear it. But here is mine anyway! okay, all the classic minimal deep bass tunes and DJ’s are amazing and ground breaking. That was dub step in its infancy , and like a person , its simple, pure and beautiful. Now dub step is in its teen years, and just like a teenager, its loud , aggressive, and a little annoying but always a good time. my point is its evolving and at rate faster then any electronic genre thats come before it. So weather you love it now, or are resentful , embrace change because its coming, always does. Grandpa-step is gonna be so sick!

He’s an easy target, but weather you love him or hate him, no one, even if you know all the right people, gets that far with out hard work and sacrifice and that should be celebrated. If you don’t like his tunes don’t listen to them, if you do like his tunes, chill out about them. and stop asking me to play them at shows.

Unimaginative Genre Names

Bro-Step, Drum-Step, Moombahton, Moombahcore, and Goomba-Wave. Is this the best we got? 2012 is upon us, lets not have the sound track to the end of the world be full of silly names like these. Don’t look at me, I don’t have any better ideas…I’m just a cynic .

The Sync Button

The best for last, I have seen fights lover the last year over this topic. Here is what i think: The real problem with it is the quality of the mixing thats the byproduct, and thats shallow mixes. By that i mean just overlapping the last few bars on one song over the first of another. When you are forced to really listen to a song, you learn to double drop and tease the audience with the next income track amongst other tricks of the trade, more of a turntables approach to mixing. If your going have a computer beat match for you , use Ableton, and do something that would be impossible for a DJ to do on two turntables.

Feels good to get that off my chest but enough negativity! JLD is about pushing sick new sounds. so lets talk tunes.

An incredible album, I cant say that enough. Blurring the lines of glitch-hop , dub step and drumstep. I feel like they took what glitch mob has been doing and really pushed it to the next level. They really create beautiful audio landscapes that you can get lost in.

If your a DJ and your reading this, i don’t care what genre you play, buy this album now! if you ever find your self at a show , and the dance floor clearing out a little bit, or you feel a lull, you grab any track off this album ( my personal favorite is Cryptkeeper ) and literally watch people loose there minds.

Need a break from the ear shredding sounds of Dub Step these days, grab this, I’m not even sure what genre to group this in (Grime, post dub step maybe… who cares) , and thats the best part! Not often where the same album you can play at the club and devastate and play that the after party for everyone to chill out too.

Michal Menert – Dreaming Of A Bigger Life

You like Pretty Lights? of course you do! then your gonna love Michal Menert , i would say stylistically the most similar to Pretty lights on the Pretty Light Label, don’t get me wrong, Gramatic and Paper Dimond are sick. but i found Michal Menert to be more smooth funky soulful, perfect to chill out too.

I know, i know, its not Dub-Step (Its grime) i always play the instrumental, and its the most gangsta thing in my collection. Super epic, and rolling drum line that makes me want to learn to c-walk.

WOM & Mat Tha Hat – Dirty Doris

Very much like High Rankin’s remix of Gramaphonedzie “Why Dont You”, it uses a 40′s sounding female vocal, i enjoy the juxtaposition of the upbeat vocals with the super heavy drop. i find it less repetitive than the High Rankin track, and just over all a better written tune.

Foreign Beggars ft Noisia – Contact (Trolley Snatcha Rmx).

This track is dance floor heat, great vocals and a fast paced tempo that satisfies the headbangers and dancers alike .

Amon Tobin (16 bit rmx) – Surge

!6 bit really divers on this one, super heavy and well produced, showing that “bro-step” can be more than just screechy mid-range sounds.

Torqux & Twist – Fear

I have constantly played this track since it came out. Using a sample from the theme song from the move Cape Fear creates a feeling of epicness that delivers with a huge drop that sends the crowd into a fury. (i’m a sucker for any sample from a good movie)

Been waiting for more then a minute for this release to surface! Finally out from Tectonic Records is Distal‘s latest and greatest piece of work. A three track EP featuring two originals – one of which is a collab with Vancouver’s HxdB – and one remix by Archie. Now, I hope guys all remember the out come of the last Distal and HxdB collab? Cause Typewriter Tune was massive in my books, so expect nothing but the best results when teamed up with Tectonic. You might wanna consider getting this on wax, cause you can! All links below.

Zeds Dead are currently on their Living Dead tour across North America and have done up this great video coupled with their new track, No Prayers with Omar Linx, to get you stoked on the tour.

This video is a fine example of a Zeds Dead show and was only shot a few weeks ago in Calgary then they played Flames Central. I caught the tour in Victoria and it was certainly a ridiculous, ravey, bass extravaganza. Find out more info via the Zeds Dead facebook page.

Rwina has done it again! By now most of you should know i’m a big fan of Rwina Records (JLD x RWINA mix) because they know how to strike gold and always with style. These two forthcoming EPs are just that.

First we’ve got another fantastic 4 track release from Desto. The No Sleep EP will be released on vinyl and digital starting March 19 on all your favourite music retailers. Here are a few words about this sweet deal and a sample to satisfy your ears.

PR WORDS:

From the ice cold landscapes of his secret lair in Finland, Desto returns to Rwina Records for another EP of forward thinking dancefloor music. A man who values quality over quantity, the Finnish producer’s work on No Sleep picks up where he left off previously on Rwina: think deep sub pressure in the finest south London tradition this time blended with sounds and rhythms that take their cue from across the spectrum of bass-influenced music such as grime’s colourful melodies or the rhythmic playfulness and sonic claustrophobia of the likes of Lex Luger.

The EP’s title track starts with an hypnotic melody that creeps up on you through a filter before a speak and spell tells you the name. Slow rhythmic progression drives the build-up showing off Desto’s impeccable attention to detail. Before you know it the drop hits you with the kind of subtlety rarely displayed in dance music today. Rolling bass floats in from left to right as the drums take a back seat. It’s this incredible attention to detail and sparse yet powerful 808 driven rhythmic instrumentation that makes No Sleep such a killer track and EP – the perfect opposite to the “in-your-face”, “who’s more obvious” wars currently ruining parts of the dance music world.

Shadow Sole blends bass pressure, eerie melodies and rolling, percussive drum work that comes off as somewhere between Ni-Ten-Ichi-Ryu era Photek and Lex Luger’s 808-led paranoid, sci-fi landscapes. Again it’s the attention to detail here that really takes the breath away, showing that less can definitely be more when it comes to making the listeners vibe. Think a slanted take on Trap music from the Artic circle for the more adventurous drug runners.

Monsters About is perhaps the planet where the ride left us once it ran out of juice. Desto brings the monsters out by once more tapping into the paranoid and claustrophobic potential that Trap has built its success on. Chest-pounding drums and rhythmic movements are alternated with robotic voices and ice cold synths reminiscent of Grime’s darker corners to create the perfect soundtrack for that lone space wanderer who went the wrong way after setting off to explore the planet. Don’t look too close into the darkness or it might bite back.

Finger snaps and a colourful, hypnotic melody set off Can’t Take It. The drums roll in and we’re away into space powered by melodies that take their cue from Bristol and Grime’s more colourful moments and an additional power boost from deep bass kicks. The ride is bumpy yet pleasant as your pilot takes through the galaxy’s more interesting corners. Don’t let the pleasantness fool you however, this ride still has enough in it to make you take out a lighter and call for a rewind.
Staying original is no mean feat in this day and age. Location plays a part, and Desto shows that his geographical isolation gives him plenty of space to soak in influences but keep the balance right between a personal sound and something that merely seeks to imitate. The references on No Sleep can seem incredibly clear at times yet the overall result is remarkably Desto’s own. The way he strips each track down to its bare essentials and uses these for full impact is impressive and mesmerising. Nas once said that sleep is the cousin of death. Desto just proved that no sleep can be just as dangerous.

Not much information yet about this forthcoming EP from the masterful Eprom, but that doesn’t matter cause you just need to hear this! I heard a clip of this a few weeks ago and almost fell off my chair. In my opinion this track will be as big if not bigger then CBat by Hudson Mohawke. To make things even crazier they’ve paired up the release with a remix from Machinedrum! So you know this is gonna catch fire. Enough words, listen up!

Although not necessarily the first place that pops to mind when thinking of dubstep hotspots, New Zealand has been incubating some of the best artists to explore the low end frequencies in the past minute. One such duo, this week’s featured podcast artists and our interviewees; Truth, have been drawing heads lately and for good reasons. With links to crews like Deep Medi and collaborations with big names like Silkie and Ms Dynamite, you’re likely only going to be hearing more about Truth as they set out to leave their imprint on North America.

Hot on the cusp of a North American tour, with plenty of Canadian dates for all us Canucks, Truth took some time to chat with us about the tour and give us some insider info on what you can expect to see when you catch them out.

Dub Selekta: Hey guys! First things first, thanks very much for chatting with us! Stoked to chat with you in advance of your J’aime le Dubstep mix. Now this mix, can you tell us a bit about it? I hear it packs some heavy weight…

Truth: We’ve been in the studio over the past couple of months in New Zealand, really focusing on making tracks which pack in the bass weight. Have been taking the “less is more” approach to our sound, stripping things back and putting a bit more of an emphasis on space and dynamics. We’re really big fans of the darker side of dubstep, we’ve always loved horror movie soundtracks, and spooky atmospherics, haunted shit… but our roots also lie in late 90′s neuro Drum n Bass… Optical, Ed Rush, Trace, Konflict, Bad Company etc… and even earlier than that stuff from people like Photek and the Metalheadz sound in general.

So this mix is all about combining those elements. Heavy basslines, solid drumwork, darker vibes lots of tension and release. We’ve selected tracks which we’re really into listening to and also playing. We also love playing unreleased music, so in this mix all but one track are unreleased music we have been sent (or have made).

Anyway, it’s really up to the listener to figure out and enjoy, but I guess that’s our take on things..

DS: And in addition to your J’aime le Dubstep mix you’ve also just dropped another mix in the Truth Chronicles series. Did you guys have a specific vision behind the mini mix series?

TR: We spend a lot of time touring and on the road, so it’s hard to always be able to record and put out full-length mixes. We’ve always thought it would be dope to put out a mix each month with the music we’re feeling at the time… this is our way of doing that. It’s taking the 9-10 tracks we’re most feeling that month and putting them together for everyone to hear. Even if we’re in the middle of a hectic tour we should be able to find 15 minutes to record something. If it’s at someone’s studio or even soundcheck before a gig.

The other thing about making it 15 min is that it’s the perfect little snapshot if your waiting for the bus, or in your lunch break at work.

DS: This is totally true. I hear you’re about to embark on a pretty large tour too. Can you give us a bit of info about that?

TR: We’re about to hit 4 Australian cities, then a couple of New Zealand dates before coming and playing 4 gigs for you guys in Canada, we can’t fuckin’ wait! Been waiting a long time to play in Canada.

Following that we’re going to be touring the USA for a few months, well on and off for the next year probably, already have about 15 dates, and we’re taking bookings for April-June! Later in the year we will be touring the UK and EU also.

DS: Are there any particular cities on the tour that you’re especially excited to play?

TR: We’re obviously excited to be playing all the cities on this tour! Have never been to Canada so we’re really looking forward to all of the cities there!

DS: Wow! Well I’m sure you’ll get a great welcome here in Canada. So in all the touring and traveling you both have done, have you hit a particular city that happened to have a thriving bass community where you didn’t expect there to be one?

TR: We honestly never know what to expect. But there are a LOT of places out there with thriving bass communities, and a lot of dedicated promoters and musicians keeping things real for the people. Places where people really feel part of their scene… Places like Denver, Colorado which everyone knows has a great scene, is largely thanks to the individuals involved with putting on the nights, and their philosophy behind doing so.

To us there are certain elements which places with a solid bass scene have in common. On to it, forward thinking promoters who book great musicians and Djs and have a feeling for what the people are into. Really solid soundsystems with proper bass weight, the ones where you can feel the bass in your chest and your face goes numb. With that mentality people come back again and again as it’s always an experience for them. That’s how people in a scene get to know one another and bond over the music, and that’s what’s behind a great scene.

There are a few of those kind of places around the world, and I think the people in those places know who and where they are.

DS: Those are good thoughts. So when we’re talking about production for you two, whats the creative process like? Does one of you automatically take the reigns on certain parts of a track?

TR: Not really. It used to be a bit more structured in that sense. One of us would make most of the drum tracks, stuff like that. But nowadays we both tend to work on all parts of a track together, or take turns to ‘drive’ while the other gives feedback and ideas. Often once we’ve got a rough layout done on a track which we’re working on one of us will add the finishing touches, extra details, work on the mixdown etc etc… which is often a process which is easier done alone.

As far as the creative process goes. It’s different for every track. We’ll usually start on a basic drum pattern which gives a rhythmic background. After that it might be finding some dope samples, or making melodies and sounds on synths. Or alternatively we might work on the bassline next. Most of our tracks we would pay the most attention to the bassline elements, as these are probably the most important parts of the track for us, in terms of what drives it.

We also try to keep things simple, not have too many things cluttering a track, but rather focusing everything on what is going on and using all of the elements to compliment each other.

DS: KISS, best method of all! Ok, of all the tracks you guys have produced, do you have one that stands out as a definite favourite?

TR: Haha, that would be like picking a favourite child. I don’t think it would be possible to do. There are different tracks that we love for different situations or reasons of course. For example “The Fatman” because it was one of the first tracks we made and the first to be released… but really, we only put stuff we like, so I’d have to say all of it!

DS: Haha good answer! With the current climate in electronic music, and dubstep having to broken into the mainstream, how do you guys stay innovative in your style and production?

TR: We just do what we do and don’t let what’s going around influence us too much. Of course, the environment your in is going to be of influence subconsciously, but we don’t take too much notice of what is popular or not. Just follow what we like.

DS: You guys have collaborated with some huge names. Everyone from Miss Dynamite to Silkie, to Tunnidge to the Black Seeds! Are there any more exciting upcoming collabs you can give us hints on?

TR: Definitely! We’re working on music with so many people, recently we’ve been doing stuff with DJ Madd, Megalodon, Crushington, Olie Bassweight, Kromestar and a few others. About to start something with Seven as well which we’re really looking forward to!

DS: Wow, huge things to come! If you were to look at the top most played track on your iPod, what would it be?

TR: Right now… anything King Tubby.

DS: Sounds delicious! And lastly, what can we expect to see and hear from you guys in 2012?

TR: Apart from all the touring, we’ve been working on tracks for a second album and this will be released in 2012.

In the not-too-distant future we’re releasing a 12” with New York-based Tuba recording… their last 12” was with J Kenzo, so we’re following on from that with “All Alone” and “Good & Evil”.

Then we have another 12” on Boka, which we’re really looking forward to “Insanity” / “Skitzo” – both on a neurotic tip, hence the names.

There are a few remixes coming out over the next couple of months too.

Following those, we’re in talks with a couple of really exciting labels regarding releases.. I wish we could spill the beans, but people will just have to keep their eyes on our pages, facebook, soundcloud, twitter etc for updates.

Ben Samples, well respected badman in the glitch hop arena, comes correct with a brand new batch of amazing, original material with his first full release from MalLabel Music, the deftly titled Life of the Party EP, four choice tunes ready to permeate dance floors worldwide Feb. 28th. 
The EP comprises a grip of spry, chunky grooves packaged magnificently into some incredible bass bin knocking jams. Opening up the EP is Capture the Flag, a beastly melody stuffed with heroic, buzzing analog bass lines grinding aside stoutly hip hop breaks. Second is a veritable attention grabber entitled Bred 2 Party, endowed with ripping, crunchily distorted leads and big beats sure to set a party in motion quickly. Song number three, Onyx, is a gutsy, funky track full of thickly laden warm fuzz tones and a slapping rhythm. Finally, closing out the EP is the darkest of the quartet. Basscraft chugs and lurches with a lumbering gate, spouting intriguing sound design audio bits and an eerie, superbly supernatural vibe.
The Life of the Party EP is a certified body mover, a gem of a release that continues MalLabel’s already sterling, diverse 2012 schedule, and it’s a demonstration of one of glitch hop’s supreme talents.

After quite a wait, Butterz reposted this single to their Tumblr stating “OUT SOON.” It is no surprise that Butterz has kept this release tight on a leash after Rinse:17 which featured the labels founders, Elijah and Skilliam.

Silkie has had success with his last LP, City Limits Vol. 2, and does not seem like he’s taking a break any time soon. As for Swindle, he released his Mood Swings VIP alongside Royal T‘s Orangeade VIP not to mention his release on Amsterdam-based Rwina Records which proved as funky as his prior releases on Planet Mu.

It’s a relief to see that this release is still set and once it’s out, you will definitely be hearing it more:

Taiki and NUlight are both admirably passionate about music and rightly so. Their own production has grown in strides and still rapidly maturing in the short time they’ve been a duo act.

Taiki, although still at such a tender age, found his passion firstly in Electro/House where he received support from some of the top Electro DJs, resulting in radio plays and significant growth of profile for his initial productions. NUlight, has been mastering his DJing abilities for over 8 years, firstly in Drum’n’Bass and then moving onto Electro where his and Taiki’s roots are still apparent in their material today.

Got an awesome new video on the docket from one of the most easily underated producers in electronic music. Adam F, the jungle and drum and bass master, dishes up a little dubstep on his new release; When the Rain is Gone. The six track EP features the title track, with a radio edit, plus another four remixes from some big names we’re stoked to see.

The original version wavers between a big synth sound with strong female vocals before the track drops into a crashing explosion of sound, complete with splashing drum patterns hit and the bassline judders.

As for remixes, Adam F & Corey Enemy turn out a huge VIP before Delta Heavy, Subscape and Michael Woods each have their turn at the track. Poised for release on March 18th, looks like this one is going to be a big one!

To keep us entertained while we wait for the release, Adam F has dropped the official video for the EPs title track, which you can see below. An intense warehouse looking party, things get bass heavy and super sexy in this sweaty dance down.

Welcome back to another Beat Sheet. February has been too kind–and still another week to go!

“Bricks” – Maribou State – Fat! Records

I had never heard of Maribou State before a few weeks ago, when this single dropped into my lap. As such, I was pleasantly surprised to hear a strong offering of original future garage. The highlight “Bricks” meanders along on a crisp, low-slung tip, filled out with distant strings and a lush female vocal sample. The headphone crew will especially appreciate the percussive nuances here, as rimshots and gentle hand drums pan about an airy mix. Unlike some future garage, “Bricks” is never predictable, moving in and out of half-time while Maribou State works magic with a toolbox of effects. Perhaps most importantly is the tasteful use of the vocal sample—the tune doesn’t rely on it for emotion, but rather channels equal parts melancholy, yearning, and regret with a slightly swung original lead. Hats off to this newcomer.

“Lucid” – Bobby Champs – Pictures Music

Next up is another producer I hadn’t heard of previously (maybe I’m not as hip as I thought I was). Bobby Champs recent EP on the art-party-music collective Pictures Music is a must for any fan of that ever-growing futurism/electro sound. “Lucid” sees Champs channeling his inner Boddika, laying down a stripped 808 rhythm, complete with an emotionless female bark on “hook” duty. The rave crew knows what’s coming, and Champs isn’t one to let them down, releasing a razor 303 to devour the dancefloor. Rugged filters keep the line mean until a brief break into Addison Groove territory in the second drop. By the time that menacing bassline returns, it’s safe to say everyone will be beating on a drum of some sort.

“Scruff Box” – Randomer – Hemlock

Make way—big boy coming through. Randomer is out in full stompy mode on his Hemlock debut, serving up two choice cuts of pounding electro-garage. “Scruff Box” barely gives the DJs enough time to beat match before flexing in full force. Per usual, the drums are a dizzying barrage of rimshots, hard toms, and rough hats. Pushing everything forward are the surging bassline and elephantine kick, moving enough air to keep those speaker-huggers at bay. Unfortunately the whole single clocks in at under 8 minutes, but I reckon Randomer knew if he went on for too much longer he’d be liable for property damage.

Long live bass.

It’s been far too long since I released a Dubstep mix, probably close to 3 or 4 months. Surrounded by a world of Brostep I had almost lost faith in Dubstep until I went to see N-type & Hatcha at Bassmentality in Toronto a little while back. I came back from that show with a new found joy for Dubstep and how powerful it can be without being over the top & desperate for attention.

So I took it upon myself on Valentine’s Day to bust out a set of pure dubstep love for anyone in early attendance, too bad the PK subs didnt come on until the Headliners cause I think I could have knocked the place down with these tunes.

Enjoy the mix. It turned out great considering that the sound tech kept unplugging my booth monitor and turning the sound on and off trying to trouble shoot the insane amount of gear on the stage.
